Importance Of Budgeting - One’s Financial Means

The importance of budgeting becomes apparent when planning your financial goals.  Budgeting means to live within one’s financial means, which is a huge contrast to how millions of Americans are currently living.  It is important to plan a budget before your debt gets out of control.  However, if you are already in debt, it is just as important, if not more important to create a budget.

A budget will force you to control your spending. If you are already in debt a budget can be an important tool to teach you to live below your means.  Living below your means is the only way you can work towards reducing and/or eliminating your debt completely.

The internet is full of resources to help you learn how to create a budget.  To create a budget, no fancy software is required.  You only need a notebook, pencil, and a calculator.  Sit down and record everything you spend in a month. It is crucial that you write down everything so that you can determine exactly where you money is going.  It may be necessary to track everything for an entire pay period to fully understand where your money is going.

Remember to keep all of your receipts and a record of your monthly bills. Once you have recorded your expenditures for an entire month, you should be able to accurately calculate a budget.  Your monthly expenditure list should also clearly show you where you are spending money that is unnecessary.  Once you have paid your bills analyze how much of what is left over you can put towards savings and debt.  It is important to establish a savings account, especially for emergencies.  This helps prevent future debt.

Examine your income and how much you need to allocate for necessary bills. Make sure that the first thing you do when budgeting is to put aside money to pay for these. Track each bill as it is paid, and also track how much you are spending on miscellaneous items. Once you have determined how much you usually spend on miscellaneous expenses, slash that amount in half and set aside that amount for this type of spending. This will be your miscellaneous allowance, and once you have spent this do not allow yourself to spend any more on such items.

Examine what you have saved per month by cutting your miscellaneous spending.  Reallocate funds for savings by dividing the types of savings into categories.  You will need to make a column for regular savings, emergency savings, and debt savings.  These three categories will allow you to reallocate your savings to be sure that it is used for a specific purpose.

It may be difficult at first to stick to a budget, but the longer you practice, the easier it will become. It can take a long time to change behaviors, especially attitudes and mindsets regarding money.  The major importance of budgeting is to establish a method to track how your income is allocated between expenses and savings.
